Stephen G. Snyder, President and Chief Executive Officer, TransAlta Corporation
Mr. Snyder joined TransAlta in September 1996 as President and Chief Executive Officer. Prior to joining TransAlta, Mr. Snyder had a successful career with Noma Industries Limited and General Electric Corporation in Canada and Belgium, as well as key positions with General Electric Corporation between 1978 and 1999. Mr. Snyder has a bachelor of science in chemical engineering from Queen's University and a master of business administration from the University of Western Ontario. In addition, he has honorary degrees from the University of Calgary (LLD), and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (bachelor of applied technology).
He is a Director of TransAlta Corporation and CIBC. He is Chair of The Conference Board of Canada, Chair of the Calgary Stampede Foundation, a Trustee of The Conference Board (U.S.), and a Director of the Calgary Stampede. Mr. Snyder is a past chair of the Calgary Zoological Society (2002-2006), the Canadian Electrical Association (2002), the United Way Campaign of Calgary & Area (2001) and the Calgary Zoo's "Destination Africa" capital campaign (2003). In 2005, he was awarded the Alberta Centennial medal.
Steve Allan, Vice President & Managing Partner of RSM Richter
Mr. Allan is a very respected business and community leader within Calgary. In March of 2005, he began a two-year term as chairman of the board and president of the Calgary Stampede. Mr. Allan has been a Stampede volunteer for more than 30 years and his leadership on the board of directors has been instrumental in the Stampede's efforts to enhance and expand its contribution to Calgary and southern Alberta. Mr. Allan is vice-president and managing partner of RSM Richter in Calgary. He was recently recognized nationally as one of the top 20 expert witnesses in his field.
Mr. Allan is the past president of the Calgary Downtown Rotary Club and of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta. Mr. Allan currently is a director of The Calgary Foundation and of University Technologies Inc.
Mr. Allan and his wife Marjie have three children and one grandchild. He enjoys running, and has completed a number of marathons and triathlons. Mr. Allan's commitment to the community reflects in his pride for his family's pioneer roots in Calgary, which date back to the late 1800s.
Cody Church, Partner, TriWest Capital Partners Inc.
Mr. Church is one of three founding partners of TriWest Capital Partners, one of the leading private equity groups in Canada. Prior to returning to Calgary in 1998, he worked at EXOR American, a private equity group located in new York. Prior to joining EXOR, he was a member of the Leveraged Finance Group of Credit Suisse First Boston where he worked with financial buyes in areas of acquisition and divestiture assignments, high yield bonds, IPO's and refinancings.
Mr. Church grew up in Cochrane area where his family has an active ranching operation. He graduated with a Bachelor of Economics from Harvard University. He is currently a member of the Alberta Harvard College Interview Committee, and is a director of a number of private Canadian companies.
Brian A. Felesky, Q.C., C.M., Partner, Felesky Flynn, Barristers and Solicitors
Mr. Felesky received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1965 and his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1968 from the University of Alberta. He is a member of the Alberta Government Business Tax Committee and Personal Tax Committee; Director of the Calgary Stampede Foundation; Co-chair of 2002 United Way campaign; Past Chair of the University Technologies International, Inc; a member of the Board of Governors of the Council for Canadian Unity; Director of the Modern Arts Centre; and a Director of various corporations including TransCanada Power LP and Suncor Energy Inc. His previous community involvements include; past Director of the Calgary Olympic Development Association; past Executive member of the Board of Governors of the University of Calgary; and past Director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Brian has received numerous awards, including the Order of Canada, The Queen's Jubilee Medal, the U of A - Alumni Honor Award, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association.
Bob Hamilton, Vice-President, RBC Financial Group
Mr. Hamilton has been an Executive with the Royal Bank Financial Group for the past 18 years where he is involved in financial planning and investments for institutions and individuals, as well as managerial responsibilities. Bob's community service is extensive. He is most proud of his role as a board member of organizations such as the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation, Calgary Stampede Foundation, Wilfrid Laurier University Board of Governors, Red Deer College Foundation Board, and as the co-founder of the Tim Hamilton Endowment Scholarship Fund at the Red Deer College and the Wish Foundation of Alberta. Mr. Hamilton's enthusiasm, positive attitude, professionalism, creative approach to problem solving and his ability to successfully encourage others to give back to their community have served him well as a leader in his professional and volunteering activities.
Scott Hunt, President and CEO, Koda Capital Corp.
Mr. Hunt has over 16 years' experience in corporate finance and business development and has held senior management positions in both private and publicly traded companies. He is currently President & CEO of Koda Capital Corp., a private venture capital corporation, a position he has held since 1990. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Board for the Calgary Stampede Foundation from 2002 to 2005. Mr. Hunt is a member of Triton's Compensation Committee and Corporate Governance Committee.
M. Ann McCaig
Mrs. McCaig is a tireless and dedicated volunteer who has made many lasting contributions to Calgary, the province and the country. Ann earned a Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1961 and moved to Calgary to teach English and history. Her strongest accomplishments are seen in her work to strengthen and support post-secondary education and her advocacy of programs for children and youth. Ann served on the U of C's board of governors from 1984 to 1994 before coming chancellor in 1995. At the end of her term in 1998, the university conferred upon her the title chancellor emeritus in recognition of her outstanding service to the school, which has also included co-chairing the Faculty of Management's $13 million fundraising campaign and serving as vice-chair on the national Building on the Vision $40 million campaign. She is chair of the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre in Calgary. Ann has also served as co-chair of Alberta Children's Hospital's All for One-All for Kids campaign, which raised $50 million for the new Calgary facility. She was Chair of the Calgary Zoo's Tusks and Tails Ball, which raised $1 million over four years for education and conservation education at the zoo. Other community service duties include past chairperson of the Calgary Foundation, board member of the Banff Centre Foundation, director of the Calgary United Way, National Director of the Shaw Festival Niagara-On-The-Lake and Director of the Nature Conservancy of Canada. She has served on the board of Suncor Energy since 1995. She is a recipient of the Canada 125 Award, the YWCA Woman of Distinction Lifetime Achievement Award and a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International. In 2005, Ann was given the Alberta Centennial Award and was also made a member of the Order of Canada.
David McDermid, President of Ghost River Investments Inc.
Mr McDermid is a native Calgarian who received his LLB from the University of Alberta and an LLM from the London School of Economics.
He spent his legal career with Bennett Jones LLP and retired from the partnership in 2000 after having served on its Executive Committee and as its Chief Operating Partner.
He is currently President of Ghost River Investments Inc, a private investment corporation.
Mr McDermid, while practicing law, served on the boards of numerous public companies and now sits on the boards of several private companies and not-for-profit organizations.
Current community involvements include serving as Chairman of the Salvation Army's Advisory Board, President of the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School Foundation, and as a board member of the Alberta Mentor Foundation for Youth and head of its Risk Management Committee.
Mr McDermid has served on the Board of The Calgary Stampede Foundation since 2002 and is Chairman of its Programs and Activities Committee.
Prior community involvements include serving as Chairman of the Centennial Arenas Society, Chairman of Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta, Chairman of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School, sessional lecturer at the University of Calgary, and instructor for the Law Society of Alberta bar admission program.
Barry Munro, Managing Partner for Calgary office of Ernst & Young and Senior Vice President of Ernst & Young Orenda
Barry is the Managing Partner for the Calgary office of Ernst & Young, the Oil and Gas Industry Leader for Ernst & Young in Canada and is a Senior Vice President of Ernst & Young Orenda based in Calgary. He specializes in all facets of corporate finance, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, valuations and financings. Barry's experience includes advising on deal sourcing, valuation, negotiations and financings, and in leading multi-disciplinary teams containing tax, legal, due diligence and accounting professionals. Barry provides overview advice on most of Ernst & Young Orenda's corporate finance projects in Alberta. Barry's past professional activities include a secondment to the Office of the Chief Accountant at the Alberta Securities Commission.
Jock Osler, President, Jock Osler Communications Inc. and chairman of Communication Incorporated.
Mr. Osler has spent 50 years in the communications business as journalist, corporate public affairs executive, political adviser, diplomat and consultant. He was a journalist for 16 years with the Calgary Herald and with Financial Times of Canada in Toronto and Montreal. From 1971 - 1979, he held senior public affairs positions in the NOVA group of energy companies. In 1979, he became press secretary to Prime Minister Joe Clark in Ottawa and remained in his office until 1983 when he joined Canterra Energy Ltd. in Calgary as director of public affairs. He was appointed Minister (Public Affairs) at the Canadian Embassy in Washington D.C. in 1987. There he was responsible for media, cultural and academic relations. He established Jock Osler Communications Inc. in 1995 to provide strategic communications counsel, including reputation and issues management, media and crisis communications training and presentation skills workshops. He is also chairman of Communication Incorporated, a full-service agency based in Calgary, with affiliates across Canada. An active community volunteer, Mr. Osler is a past chairman (1993-2001) of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, a provincial agency responsible for allocating some $20 million in lottery funds annually. He is a member of the boards of directors of the Calgary Stampede Foundation and the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium Society, a past chairman and present member of the grandstand committee of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, a member of the Calgary Stampede board nominating/shareholder relations committee, a member of the Calgary Herald Advisory Board and a member of the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine Dean's Advisory Council and Faculty of Education Dean's Development Advisory Board. He was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005.
David B. Robson, Chairman of Vada Capital
Until February 2004, Mr. Robson was Chairman and CEO of Veritas DGC Inc. He has held the position of either Chairman or President since he founded Veritas in 1974 in Calgary, Alberta. Since that time, he has held the position of Chairman of Vada Capital, a family owned private equity firm. After earning a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 1964, Dave held managerial positions with CDP Computer Data Processors Ltd. and Digitech Ltd., both seismic processing firms, before he founded Veritas. Outside work, Dave can often be found in blue jeans and a cowboy hat, enjoying his passion for horses. He has been actively involved in the cutting horse industry for approximately 25 years and has been president of the Canadian Cow Horse Supreme since 1983. He is a member of the Canadian Cutting Horse Association (CCHA) and is very active on the CCHA International Liaison Committee. In 2001, Dave was elected to the CCHA Hall of Fame for his outstanding contribution in promoting cutting in Canada.
Jack Steen, Investment Advisor, RBC Dominion Securities
Mr. Steen is Past President of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede (1997-1998) as well as a director on Scouts Canada Chinook Foundation where he chair of the investment committee responsible for management of a $5.5 million portfolio. Jack is also a volunteer for the Millarville Racing and Agriculture Society, where he sits on the rodeo committee responsible for raising sponsorship dollars.
Peter Valentine, B. Comm, FCA, ICD.D
Mr. Valentine, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, holds a Bachelor of Commerce (with Distinction) degree from the University of British Columbia and is a Chartered Accountant. Peter Valentine currently holds a joint appointment as Senior Advisor to the President and CEO of the Calgary Health Region and to the Dean of Medicine, University of Calgary. Mr. Valentine served as the Auditor General of Alberta for a seven-year period from 1995 to 2002. In March 1995, Peter retired from a 37-year career with KPMG. After graduating from the University of British Columbia in 1958 and qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1961, he was elected to partnership in KPMG in 1966. During his public practice career, he served terms as Chairman, KPMG International Energy Practice Group, Partner-in-Charge, Audit, KPMG Calgary office, and as a Senior Audit Partner. Immediately prior to retirement, he was Partner-in-Charge of Professional Practice of the Calgary Office of KPMG, a Canadian Securities Reviewing Partner and a member of the firm's Auditing and Accounting Policy Committee. Mr. Valentine is a member of the Financial Executives Institute, Institute of Internal Auditors and the Institute of Corporate Directors.
Mr. Valentine is a longtime volunteer with the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede serving on the Parade, Historical and the Downtown Attractions Committees. He is also the President and a founding Director of The Nat Christie Foundation and a Governor of the Mark Kingsbury Foundation for Sustainable Mountain Tourism. He is the 2003 recipient of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the profession, the Alberta community and to the public sector. In 2003 he received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal from Her Honour, the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, in recognition of his service to the community.In 2005 he received the Alberta Centenial Medal in recognition of outstanding service to the people and province of Alberta by his Honour, the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.
Don Wilson
Don Wilson is immediate past president and chairman of the board of the Calgary Stampede. Prior to beginning his two-year term in 2003, he was president and CEO and a member of the board of directors of Prudential Steel Limited. After a 34-year career, Don retired from Prudential in 2000.
Don has been a Stampede volunteer since 1964, and a shareholder since 1973. He began his volunteer involvement with the Downtown Attractions committee before joining the Rodeo committee, where he served as chair from 1985 until 1988. During his tenure with the Rodeo committee, his leadership led the way to the implementation of a plan for the first box seats in the infield. Since being elected as a director in 1988, Don has been responsible for 12 committees. Don's contribution to the Stampede has been immense, but he is particularly gratified by his 1988 involvement, when he chaired the Olympic Rodeo committee - the first of its kind in any Olympics.
Following his retirement in 2000, he was elected to the board of Maverick Tube Corporation, a position he retired from in 2004. Don also served as president of both the 400 Club and the Calgary Petroleum Club. Born and raised in the Calgary area, Don enjoys cattle penning and golfing. He and his wife Joan, known for co-authoring The Best of the Bridge series cookbooks, have one daughter, two sons, and seven grandchildren.
